I finally got caught up on my Hulu queue. I was watching the episode where Bones gives birth. She was in a heated discussion with her partner about wanting a home birth. I could not believe such a hit show was showcasing that hot-button topic as advocated by a highly educated female. I was giddy to say the least.
I wanted to love it, I really, really did. But then it happened. She was lying on the floor, on her back...like all other shows with birth scenes. WTH!!! Apparently these writers did not put any research into actual traditional birth practices, such as having the mother in an upright or otherwise advantageous position. Thank you boring, been-there, done-that TV. This birth scene was no different from any other one I have seen. Good job Fox Broadcasting. You could have made this one episode to remember and cause lots of buzz about but you took the easy road out. What happened to Fox being the network that had outrageous characters saying and doing outrageous things? This would have been the perfect outlet to show a woman having a truly natural birth experience. How outrageous and anti-normal would that have been to see. Fox has stopped pushing the envelope. Count me sorely disappointed.
It didn't matter that Bones didn't give birth in a hospital, she still did it in the same position she would have had she been in a birth suite on a hospital bed. Homebirth advocates can like this episode up until the actual birth. During a hospital tour with other mothers-to-be, Bones espoused reasons not to have a baby in the hospital just for the infections that the immature immune system of the new baby would not be able to fight. That was a pretty funny scene.
Oh, in case you haven't figured it out, I am PRO all things natural and home birth.
Comment away.
I'm not especially big on home birth, I'm also not very educated in it, I'll be the first to admit, but even I was thinking it wasn't the right position... LOL... I wonder though if it had anything to do with Emily either being pregnant during filming or if they filmed after she gave birth. She had her baby boy last September and maybe it wouldn't work for her? I know, I'm rolling my eyes as I type this! Tee-hee... I did think that it started out being a great transition into something but alas, someone-somewhere did not perhaps do their homework... I do remember the Charmed episode where one of the characters wanted a home birth and finally got it, she was much more up-right but still in a more "traditionally accepted" position. Perhaps television writers don't think we (the general public) would understand a birth in any other position? I mean, most intimates scenes in television are still... Let's just say "traditional"? Clearly our imaginations are better than the writers...
ReplyDeletei watched bones a couple of times. home birth seems scary, but back in the days, it was the only way, and people seemed to make it fine.

the world does not even know home birth is an option!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSounds like intriguing viewing. Homebirth is not well supported in Australia. Midwives struggle to get insurance and legislation is not supportive. Thanks for linking up with Flash Blog Friday :-)
ReplyDeleteInteresting read - thanks for sharing. If I had seen the episode, I would have never known the difference...learn something new every day.
ReplyDeleteIm stopping by from Create with Joy's Friendship Friday and just voted for you on We're on the Fence.
Have a great weekend.
While I agree with you, I did have a homebirth and I was in the same position. It was the most comfortable for me. So it is not like it was unrealistic in that point. I think it is great that they showed a homebirth (although funny it was in a barn..), could they have taken it a bit further, sure, but the message still came across.
