#25DaysXmas Blogshare: Swedish Christmas

¤Christmas Blogshare¤
Post of the Day - Dec. 14th
When I lived in Sweden, the most fun and learning I experienced was during the Christmas season. There were many things I saw that I found interesting and unique to the culture, too many for one post, so I will share just three of those things.

First, there is the very special celebration of Sankta Lucia. This is a day of light and song that focuses on the longest night and therefore darkest day of the year. There is usually a girl selected in each school to play the role, she gets to wear the special crown with candles and leads a procession. Songs are sung as well.

To go along with Lucia, there is lussekatter! These are deliciously simple buns decorated with raisins and flavored by saffron, the most expensive spice in the world. It has a special flavor and color that is worth its weight in gold! Just a few strands mades a whole batch of delectable baked goods.

And finally, every home in Sweden is punctuated by ljussetake in the windows. These are beautiful traditional or modern lights used only during the dark winter days to give light.  They are beautiful. Your eyes are drawn to them in whatever house you visit or even your own because they provide a sparkle and some warmth in the cold, dark days.
